Dive In ... & Be the Ocean

About

'Gypsy Divers' is a PADI authorized dive center, advantageously located, on Beach number 2, Govind Nagar, in the very heart of Havelock Island.

It is the brainchild of Poonam Darne, a much sought-after scuba diving instructor, with dual credentials from PADI and SSI. She has 10 years of experience, as a diver and 6, as an educator. She has learned, taught and explored in Phuket, Koh Tao Island, Gili Islands and of course, Havelock Island.

Poonam, originally from Mumbai, is supported by 4 dedicated PADI certified DIVE MASTERs and 1 instructor. All the DIVE MASTERs are locals and therefore have detailed knowledge, of the best sites in Havelock and the rest of Andaman Islands. The instructor is from Kerala.

Together they form Team Gypsy. The dive center is set in its own 3500 square meters, of verdant surroundings. It has spacious premises leading, to a picturesque private beach. It is a great place to learn or dive, as the clear water is complemented, by a stunning white and golden sandy floor, multicolored reef and fine marine life. Except for June or July the underwater visibility is stunning.

The central location of the dive center has many advantages. Transportation facilities are within a few minutes reach. The booking office for boats and scuba diving, located on a small jetty, is just 2km away. Incidentally, this is the place, from where visitors arrive and depart.

The island's two ATMs ( State Bank of India and Axis Bank and the branch of State Bank of India. Both ATMs are open 24 hours a day and accept all Indian and international cards, & its just 250 meters / 2 minutes walk from Gypsy Divers Dive resort. Walking for 5 to 10 minutes will take you to the market, Government Hospital or medicine store. Post office and Police Station, both are 2 km away.

Gypsy Divers is inspired by Poonam's undersea experiences. She was struck, by the nomadic existence of whales, sharks, dolphins and turtles, who roam the ocean like free spirits. She thus set up Gypsy Divers, as a means to help divers explore the ocean, broaden their horizons and live a vibrant life.

The core competencies of Team Gypsy comprise empathy, commitment, interactive communication and patience.

Team Gypsy views a situation from the client's perspective and can thus relate to their unique requirements.

The entire team is committed, to the highest standards in safety. The dive center is equipped, with branded gear of international repute. It is stringently tested and meticulously cleaned, on a daily basis.

Open or interactive communication (both verbal and non-verbal), fosters a trusting environment. It facilitates the mastering of skills and is also a key factor in underwater communication. Students are introduced to their chosen course through books and videos. They are encouraged to learn, at their own pace.

Patience and personal attention comes handy, in dealing with students, who may take a long time, to master even the basic skills.

From basic to advanced, Gypsy Divers offer you a host of Dive Courses. They come in a combination of different packages/prices.

Gypsy Divers invites you, to learn, experiment, travel, explore and enjoy, with assured safety.

Poonam Darne

Poonam Darne is the owner and Chief Adventure Planner of Gypsy Divers. Diving being her raison core of existence, she is also a self-appointed crusader of scuba diving.

Her passion for diving and love for the ocean inspired her, to buy land at Havelock Island, so that she could establish her own dive center. Her husband D. Santosh, a Hindi film & theater actor, is a co-adventurer.

Poonam is curious, enthusiastic, patient, non-judgmental and above all humorous. An excellent communicator, she can explain difficult concepts, in the simplest of terms. She is always composed and has helped many students, to try and overcome their water fright.

These genuine qualities make her, a much sought after diving instructor and dive-buddy. Her rock-solid reputation is a result, of word-of-mouth recommendations.

She is one of the pioneers in Havelock, in mentoring boys and girls from the Karen Tribe and help them secure a PADI certification. This initiative has helped them find employment too.

Formerly a businesswoman, Poonam Darne's introduction to scuba diving was a coincidence. She visited the Andamans on the recommendations of a friend and enrolled for a scuba diving course.

Oceanographer Jacques Yves Cousteau has said that, ‘The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder'. This maxim came true for Poonam. Her first undersea experience was magical and liberating. She was virtually mesmerized, by the vibrant undersea marine life and has remained under its spell.

It also gave her new insights

She began looking at life, from an entirely unusual perspective.

She saw Whales, sharks, manta rays, turtles, and dolphins as authentic deep- diving gypsies, who explored the seven seas with uninhibited enthusiasm. She noticed that, like gypsies they lived life, on their own terms.

Inspired by their way of life she found Gypsy Divers, so that people could be motivated to learn, travel, explore, dive, share, make new friends and acquaint themselves with new cultures. In short, they could be free spirits like the gypsies and live life to its fullest.

Poonam is confident that, Gypsy Divers is the place, where they can embark, on that journey and unchain their nomadic spirit!
